Don't Miss Out!

Don't miss out on all of the benefits that Toastmasters offers. I did a speech on this very topic last year and our TM Area Governor just put out a similar message. Read a part of her message in this blog, sign up for more roles and you may get more than you even realized you signed up for.
Most of the clubs I've visited have trouble getting people to commit in advance to meeting roles other than as a speaker.

This baffles me.  I think the experience you get in other roles is far more useful in everyday business.

When you are the Toastmaster, preparing for and running meetings and introducing participants you prepare to introduce speakers and plan and run meetings at work.  I am far more often a meeting coordinator than a featured speaker.  In fact, I can't remember the last time I had to give a presentation at work, but I run or attend meetings every day.

When you are an evaluator, listening critically and providing praise and constructive criticism you are practicing the same skills that a parent, a supervisor or a sharp employee should be demonstrating.

As a general evaluator, reviewing everyone's performance and providing suggestions on improving the process, you are practicing both "big picture" and "small picture" analysis and feedback.

And as Table Topics master, you work on developing questions that evoke analytical, comprehensive communication, rather than yes/no answers.  These are skills that a meeting coordinator, supervisor, parent, spouse, date or party host can use to their advantage.
